The Works of Wint Harris

Wint's impressive glass art is created in his studio adjoining Harris Gallery. Group tours for demonstrations are always welcome at the glass studio during blowing sessions. Please call ahead to arrange for group visits. Wint's glasswork includes dynamic designs in hot-sculpted glass as well as his own personally unique glass-working techniques to produce:

Wint has developed a series of work in crystal glass with no color added.  Ths series is "Prairie Ice".  The piece to the left is approximately 9 inches long by 3 1/2 inches high.  It is one of Wint's "Prairie Ice Birds".  Wint has also created a series of sculptural "Prairie Ice Vases".

The design for the vase on the left evolved from Wint's research and development of the Prairie Ice Series of sculpture. This vase is one of Wint's "Prairie Fire Vases".  The vase form has been manipulated through folding the hot glass and reinsertion into the molten glass to create the organic look to the surface of the vase.  After the blowing is completed, Wint cuts and polishes the lip and bottom of the vase to give it that special sparkle!

Wint uses a variety of cylinder forms to display essentially an abstract use of colors against a glass "canvas".  The depth of the colors he uses creates a visual, dimensional display of patterns and shadows incorporated into the glass.

The technique of glass "canvas" has also been implemented into other vase forms.  The use of  green glass with black and red patches on this spherical piece forges a deep harmony of color.  The use of layer upon layer of crystal and interspersed color give a warm depth to the layout of the design.

Wint blows a variety of styles of bowls.  The base of this bowl is repeatedly dipped back into the molten glass, sculpted and ribbed to compliment the flowing, open bowl.  This bowl is made of smoked topaz glass.  The layers of color leave circular veils throughout the piece.

Composition of these vase forms include swirling, colored glass lines encased in crystal.  Many of these vases contain multiple layers of color, giving interesting depth to the piece.  The two pieces on the right have the addition of multiple rings of color circling the outside of them.

New ranges of form are explored in this vase using multiple dipping lines from the molten glass to build the form into a very organic vessel.  The form has been incorporated into the "Prairie Ice Vases".  The vase is colored in opal pearl white with areas of silver nitrate enhancing the mouth of the vase.

The "Prairie Fire Birds" are sculpted by folding and shaping the initial tube form, then dipping the piece back into the molten glass until the bird form is completed.

From Wint

I studied glass blowing at Kansas University under the direction of Vernon Brejcha from 1975 until my graduation in 1980.  Following graduation, I returned to my hometown of Wichita, Kansas, and continued blowing glass in various studios.

During the 24 years since my graduation from KU, my primary artistic effort is working the molten glass to create beautifully organic sculptural forms.  I have focused on creating deeply aesthetic forms that capture the sense of the fluid glass even after the form has cooled and hardened.

The harmonious alliance of flowing lines from molten glass combined with deep and subtle colors produces a rich depth in my compositions.  The resulting form allows for timeless visual and tactile enjoyment while exploring the intricacies of its design and execution.

Blowing glass is a sensual process that renders a sensual product.  The initial step is made in the blistering heat of a 2,500-degree furnace with the white heat of the molten glass.  As the form develops through the blowing and manipulation of the glass, creation of new beauty takes place.  From this fiery origin, the piece must again be tempered with heat, but now using the patience and care of lower temperatures in the annealing oven.  Finally, either a day or several days later depending on the size and the conditions, a new arrival is unveiled from the oven.  This fragile new creation must then be subjected to the cutting, grinding and polishing of the final finish.

The work I create is very touchable.  Feel the glass in your hands, or against your cheek.  How cool to the touch!  Envision the fire that formed each piece of my art.  Run your fingers over the textures of the flowing lines, the sharpness of the ground and polished rims.  It is my desire for you to feel the heat and the physical exertion required to make each form I create.  Perhaps in this manner I will have communicated to you my feelings when I created the work.

I create each piece of glass for your pleasure and enjoyment.  Always feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

From Marla Harris

Marla creates a variety of clay art.  Her use of double-wall throwing techniques allows Marla a range of creativity.  The outer wall of these forms is carved all the way through to instill positive and negative textural energy on the outside surface while keeping the smooth, thrown wall on the inside.  She incorporates various Cherokee Legends in the design of her pots, passing along the rich Cherokee history.  These double-walled pots are a must see to appreciate the depth of spirit they embody.

Marla incorporates several legends of her Cherokee heritage into her fasinating designs. Her unique double-walled construction of pots and signature smoked firing create unparalled clay art. She also makes a full line of utilitarian ware for the kitchen and table. Marla's work includes:
